Week 28: Stay-cation

Last week I shared exciting news about Gretta's and my engagement! I took three days off from work this week and had a great little stay-cation with Gretta. She was able to spend all of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in Tucson. We explored downtown, the Tucson Botanical Gardens, went for a couple of hikes and a bike ride, saw the newest Ant-Man movie, and, of course, had lots of good food. Restaurant highlights included Bebo's Tacos, Cafe a la C'Art, La Cocina, The Screamery (ice cream), Exo Coffee, and El Charro Cafe (birthplace of the chimichanga). We also had enjoyable times with my housemates playing games and sharing meals together.

On Thursday morning at 5 am, I went out to the van to drive Gretta to the airport only to be greeted with a couple inches of snow! We made it safely to the airport and I made it back to the house before 6 am. But, I did feel like I was driving through hyperspace on my way back to the house with snow blowing past my windshield.

After a day and a half of work, the weekend had arrived! We spent Saturday on the University of Arizona campus at the Festival of Books. We took in a couple of presentations from authors, perused vendor tents, and enjoyed falafel and hummus for lunch. One of the presentations was a panel of Newberry Award winners including Louis Lowry, author of The Giver. Unfortunately, they reached the 200 person capacity 10 people before us in line so we weren't able to see her.

We took public transportation to and from the event, mostly to avoid the hassle of parking but also so we could all read on our commutes. I recently finished Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity, by Justin Baldoni, and having been working through the Time Quintet series by Madeleine L'Engle (I've read A Wrinkle in Time and A Wind at the Door, currently waiting on a hold for A Swiftly Tilting Planet). Two days ago I started a new science fiction series, Red Mars, by Kim Stanley Robinson.

We also completed a record-breaking three (3) puzzles this week! Granted, two of them were 500 pieces instead of 1000, but they still count.

As some of my housemates have commented in their blogs, the weather is warming up here. As I'm writing this it's a pleasant 73 degrees, a significant upgrade from the 30 degrees I bike in some mornings. I'm savoring this season as I know there are 90-100 days waiting for me in the near future. Maybe I'll need to take another stay-cation soon.
