Week 5: Planes, Postage, Pizza, Pokes, and Produce

Writer's picture: Cade FisherCade Fisher

Tucson is the home of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. That means that sometimes while I'm eating lunch, commuting, or trying to sleep a plane flies overhead. Here's a clip so you can see what I mean:

This week I started transitioning from "job orientation mode" to learning specific tasks that I'll be able to help with. One of those tasks involves mailing orientation packets to detainees. This week the Florence Project mailed over 300 in English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Somali, and Portuguese.

Packing mailing envelopes may not be the most thought-provoking activity so I spent some time listening to a new podcast recommended by my housemate, Jessie. "Ologies" is a podcast that features experts in every field of study imaginable. So, while stuffing these packets, I learned about volcanology, primatology, and paleontology. I'll also soon start helping answer the hotline from the detention centers and helping process other incoming and outgoing mail. Maybe I'll start doing some research and updating documents about various country conditions for staff attorneys to include in their cases.

Wednesday evening our house hosted some other young-adult volunteers for a pizza night. We enjoyed sharing food together and taught them Dutch Blitz. Needless to say, they were hooked and we will be facing off against them again in the future.

On Friday we went to Walgreens to get our flu shots and newest COVID booster (the "pokes" referred to in the title). So far no adverse reactions besides a little soreness and feeling a bit tired. Let's hope it stays that way!

This week we also got over 50lbs of produce for $15 from a local organization that diverts food from the landfill for consumers. We spent our Saturday morning cutting up mangoes, tomatoes, peppers, and onions to freeze and turn into tomato sauce (for our pizza nights, of course).

And, to round out the blog post, here are a few more pictures from the week.

A brilliant sunset from Monday, our most recent puzzle, and a fun Saguaro National Park van outside of a Starbucks!

Happy October from 90 degree Tucson!

Your Mother D Y dear is spot on, Walgreen red bandaids are the coolest.

Ah yes, the screaming overhead military aircraft over SE Tucson. Look for burrowing owls nesting holes in the banks of the fenced air force base long the south side of Golf Links.

Mundane mailings work is one part of that behind the spotlights necessary work of ‘doing the good work of striving for equal rights and justice.’

Glad you discovered Market On The Move on 22nd Street. Yes, it takes an effort to collaborate to salvage this food by drying, freezing, canning, and sharing with others who don’t make it to buy and to be surprised by what’s in the 50 pound box. Your ancestors wou…

Thanks for writing this post! I love getting a glimpse of your days! I love the bandaid pic. A group that gets vaccinated together, stays together!
